Is your practice claiming its QPI payment?
The Quality Prescribing Initiative (QPI) aims to assist practices keep up to date with information on the quality use of medicines. The QPI provides financial rewards to practices for GP participation in a range of educational activities provided by the National Prescribing Service (NPS). Payments are based on $1 per standardised whole patient equivalent (SWPE). The average full time GP sees 1000 SWPEs annually.

To receive QPI payments, a practice is required to complete at least three activities per full time equivalent (FTE) GP, one of which must be a clinical audit. The other activities include educational visits from your NPS facilitator or NPS case studies.

For example if your practice has 3 FTE GPs then your practice will need to submit three clinical audits. Also three doctors will need to have had two visits from your NPS facilitator or alternatively the practice needs to submit six case studies. Individual GPs within the practice may undertake more or less activities as along as the practice completes the total number of activities.

The NPS QPI year runs from May 1 to April 30.

NPS clinical audits can be found in the NPS Prescribing Practice Review, which is sent directly to GPs throughout the year.
