Project goal

To develop an integrated approach towards the progression of information management and information technology in general practice.

Introduction

Secure effective communication between health professionals to enhance patient care is a reasonable expectation of the patients who are accessing these services.

Technological innovations continue to increase exponentially, providing new capabilities and pressures on health services to provide efficient high quality care for patients. Patients increasingly expect to be provided with up to the minute quality care in a timely and efficient manner. This is often hampered by inefficient communication between relevant key stakeholders.

The division's IMIT project aims to address the need for secure effective communication between GPs and relevant stakeholders in the divisional area. It will look to support those surgeries wishing to adopt IMIT strategies and investigate secure channels of communication between GPs, together with the feasibility of integrating with other relevant stakeholders.

"Finding ways to promote the rapid adoption of information technology to improve information management is seen by many as the single most important step that could be taken to enhance the quality of general practice." (General Practice Strategy Review Group,1997:221)

General practice is increasingly seen as a primary source of information on the current state of health of a population and of information that is integral to reaching health outcomes for the wider community. Strategies targeting GPs such as the Practice Incentive Program (PIP) are expecting GPs to be able to provide an evaluation of their services and to reach identified benchmarks in order to receive increased payments.

The ability to manage information efficiently and effectively will become paramount to the continued functioning of the division and the efficiency of general practice, with funding being linked to health outcomes. Through the IMIT project the division will be able to provide GPs with the wherewithal to manage information efficiently and effectively, assisting them to be eligible for schemes such as the PIP.
