Immunisation Project Brief |
PO Rachelle Deaker
Catch-up meningococcal C vaccination
The Government has agreed to extend the funding for the provision of free meningococcal C vaccine for those who were aged 1-19 in 2003 until June 2007. GPs are encouraged to opportunistically vaccinate patients in this age group. Meningococcal C vaccine for this group can be ordered on the routine vaccine order form.
ACIR immunisation history statement
The procedure for a parent to verify that their child is fully immunised for school entry is to provide the school with a copy of the child’s ACIR history statement. It is no longer appropriate for GPs to complete the Medical Director school immunisation certificate template or issue the former NSW immunisation certificate. Parents of children who have received their booster vaccines before school entry will automatically be issued with an ACIR history statement. Parents who have mislaid the form can telephone 1800 653 809 to receive another copy.
Varicella
Unfortunately varicella vaccine continues to be provided to ineligible age groups. This vaccine must only be provided to 18 month old children who were born on or after 1 May 2004. There is no catch-up program for this vaccine and parents presenting with children who are outside the age criteria are required to pay for the vaccine.
Varicella vaccine recommended for adolescents at 10-13 years of age is provided by a school-based program to Year 7 students. GPs are NOT to provide vaccine for this age group routinely. The NSW Vaccine Centre will continue to restrict monthly supplies of the vaccine to all practices.
