To improve the quality of care and health outcomes for mothers, babies and families in the post-natal period.

      Introduction
"Pregnancy and the birth of an infant can be a time of great joy as well as enormous stress. For most women, the antenatal and postnatal periods involve the most significant physiological, psychological and social upheaval they have negotiated thus far in their lives.

...Often little attention is paid to the considerable changes necessary in the transition to parenting and both genders are faced with experiences involving major adjustments... The results of difficulties experienced with childbearing and childrearing can be widespread, affecting not just the individual and their partner, but also the infant, other siblings, extended family and friends and ultimately the community.

The most common childbirth mental health problems involve grief, anxiety, depression and adjustment disorders. They constitute significant public health problems which are:
      • Misunderstood in our community

      • Frequently undetected, unexplained and untreated

      • Underestimated or mismanaged by health professionals

      • Implicated in problems with maternal-infant attachment

      • Related to lack of enjoyment or competence with parenting

      • Associated with an increased risk of family break-up.

Women have more frequent contact with health professionals in antenatal and postnatal visits than at other times in their lives, and these contacts could be used to maximum effectiveness in the development of reliable and relatively inexpensive assessment, treatment and preventive approaches."
(Extract from the Report on Childbirth, Stress and Depression, 1995)

This project aims to identify mothers experiencing difficulties during the post-natal period and to implement initiatives to provide support and help. It will develop a collaborative framework for the management of these mothers and their families. It is also establishing standardised guidelines that specifically aim to improve the management of postnatal depression, together with identifying networks and referral systems that enable the parent/guardian to access intensive day support facilities when needed.
